Prague – the golden city on the Moldova
In medieval times, Prague, the beautiful capital of former Bohemia, and today of the Czech Republic, was the residence for almost one hundred years of the German kings who ruled the kingdom from here. In 1348, the first university in middle Europe was formed here. History was written back then as well as today. The “Defenestrations of Prague” in 1618 (the cause of the 30 year war) and the “Prague Spring” of 1968 are well known. Prague is defined as a gothic and baroque city that emanates so much grandeur that it is known as “the Golden City”, also because most of the city remained unscathed during the Second World War. To name but a few attractions: the Castle Hill (Hradcany) with the St. Vitus Cathedral, the Charles Bridge (one of the oldest bridges in Europe), Old City Ring, Wenceslas and Charles Square, the Old Town, which has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1992, and not to forget the bohemian cuisine and delicious pilsener beer from Bohemia. Culturally, Prague has a cosmopolitan vibe, and this is evident in the pub scene with numerous jazz clubs. Prague is really worth a visit. Prague is 550 km distance from Cologne. With the ICE train it takes over 9 hours to reach Prague, so it is probably better to fly or rent a car.
