Morsbroich Castle – Museum of the year 2009
There is a cultural jewel of a very special kind, in the city right next to Cologne; Leverkusen has become known through-out the Rhineland, with the Bayer factories and a football/soccer team. In the north-east of the city there is a small chateau, with a park that enjoys a particular great reputation among art connoisseurs. It is named Morsbroich Castle or Schloss Morsbroich in the German language. For several years, an art museum has been housed there, which has drawn more and more in the focus of the friends of contemporary art. Last year there was a well-received exhibition of the artist Gerhard Richter, whose new window caused a big stir in 2007 in the south transept of the Cologne Cathedral. A hundred of his color-revised photographs have been displayed in Morsbroich. Next to changing exhibitions like this one there are also permanent exhibitions, which all together have led to the fact that Morsbroich was voted to the museum in 2009 by art critics. The quite hidden site of the castle makes the castle not so easy to find. It is worth the effort. You can reach this castle in approximately 30 minutes by car and it’s an eye-catcher for friends of culture.
