In those times, Berlin still was a divided city, but since the fall of the wall in 1989 and the reunion on October 3 1990 Berlin has gained status as a lively, cosmopolitan metropolis. The city center has especially been transformed from its prefabricated slabs to a successful experimental field for internationally known architects and city planners. The gay and lesbian scene is something to be seen. This is clear when the mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, states confidently “I am gay and that´s okay!” Since the reunion, 20 years have passed and Berlin will draw lots of attention on this year’s October 3 anniversary. 480 km away from Cologne, the capital city can be reached within 4 hours by train.
