In 1982, Karl-Heinrich Mueller, art collector from Dusseldorf, bought the island Hombroich, an unkempt park in a meadow land of the river Erft. He was seeking a new way to present his art collection. The central motif of the Museum Island and the foundation Hombroich is the motto marked by Paul Cezanne “Art parallel to nature”. It was his idea from the beginning to connect art with nature. Besides the historic buildings already present in the old park, many new ones were built; created by architect Hermann Mueller. Numerous pieces of art from the collection of Karl-Heinrich Mueller were placed in and around those buildings. Somewhat difficult to reach, the museum is situated 40 km north of Cologne in the Neusser part of town “Holzheim” and and is well worth a visit It´s easy to spend a whole day in this open-air exhibition, and as it is extensive, enjoy some peace, meditation but also inspiration.
