Burg Castle – a truly enchanting castle
The castles around Cologne might not have famous names, but that´s part of their charm. Especially interesting is the Burg Castle which is romantically located over a narrow valley in the city part Burg of Solingen. This building was the second ancestral seat of the Earls of Berg, after whom the surrounding countryside was named, and was built in the first half of the 12th century. One of the best known Earls was Engelbert the 2nd who at the same time was archbishop and elector of Cologne. After the famous battle of Worringen in 1288, the Earls of Berg moved their residence to the nearby Duesseldorf. In the 30-year war, the castle was destroyed. Since 1890, a support association has endeavored to reconstruct the building. Medieval life can be experienced here, as especially in the summer months, when many well-known medieval events and tournaments are held. A pretty collection of little townhouses completes the picture harmonically. Via the highway A3 and A1 castle Burg can be reached within a little more than half an hour by car and it is well worth visiting due to its ambience and magnificent castle museum.
