Description:
Is there any link between voice and identity? What does a voice tell us about a performer’s gender or even his/her sex?
Male and female singers with high or low voices in the 1920s (e.g. Claire Waldoff, Paul O’Montis and others), divas from the 1930s onwards (e.g. Marlene Dietrich, Zarah Leander, Hildegard Knef) and some drag-performers will be looked at within the frame work of ‚Queer Studies’. The two presentations will include many examples in order to illustrate the power of voice and music within the broader context of human identity.
Prof. Dr. Anno Mungen is director of the Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater Schloss Thurnau at the University of Bayreuth and focuses in his research on Music and Media, Music and Gender, and Opera.
