Figure skating is no doubt one of the most expressive sports. Who doesn't just adore the stories and the characters portrayed on the ice? While a tough and demanding sport for the participants, the beauty and spectacle that they create will be one of the highlights of Gay Games VIII.
We are expecting about 120 skaters. Our rink (KoelnArena II) is already well-known on the gay/lesbian figure skating scene as the home of the “Fabulous Cup” which has taken place here for several years. This competition, topped off with a gala evening, was the very first gay/lesbian figure skating competition in Europe and has grown in popularity each year. Since 2007 the “Fabulous Cup” has been a Gay Games VIII preview tournament. The very experienced organizers are looking forward to an even larger competition at Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010.
There will be several different forms of skating: singles, couples, ice dancing, artistic and creative events, and team competitions. Each event is judged on a selection of different criteria such as artistic impression, choreography, originality, interpretation, and technical merit. The outcome is as exciting and moving for the skaters as it is for the spectators.
Individual and couples will compete by age group and skill level. In Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010, spectators will see something not offered at many other skating events - any possible combination of skating partners including same sex as well as mixed couples.
