On May 31, 2010, is the last day to register as a participant in one of the 35 sports at the Gay Games VIII 2010 in Cologne. From traditional sports such as track and field, football (soccer) and swimming, to more exotic competitions such as Bodybuilding and figure skating, the Cologne Gay Games offers people the right sport for everyone at any skill level.

In the meantime over 300 volunteers are eagerly awaiting the week with mounting enthusiasm and commitment to the games. Some sports are beginning to reach maximum capacity, the databases for hosted housing and volunteer management are providing opportunities for those in Cologne and worldwide, and athletes around the world are linking together with their city teams. Last week the Rainbow Memorial Flag officially began the countdown to Gay Games VIII Cologne by starting on its journey to Cologne for the opening ceremony on 31/07/2010 in RheinEnergie Stadium.

The art and sport of Diving

Mathew Mitcham, currently one of the most famous living openly gay athletes, will be one of its most prominent faces at the Gay Games VIII in Cologne. Matthew won a gold medal in diving at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The 21-year-old Australian will interrupt his training to visit Cologne during the Gay Games, which is an important event for him. The Gay Games shows the world that you can be just as you are, without shame, a great concern of his. Many Australians have followed his lead and have registered for the Cologne Gay Games, and it should be no surprise that Matthew’s presence will give the competitions a special feel.
The competition of the art and sport of diving will take place from August 1 -3 in the central swimming hall of the German Sports University in Cologne. Competitors will be diving from the 1m and the 3m board, and from the tower, both as solo competitors and as synchronized diving.

Bowling

Men and women can play in the League Division or the Social Division (even those who have no league experience may take part). The tournament will have Singles, doubles and team competitions.
A few weeks ago, at world-famous Cologne Carnival the Bowling Center 10pin Bowling & Event held a successful rehearsal of the bowling tournament, the Gay Games VIII Cologne. With a traditional local atmosphere, participants competed and trained, and the food and beer needs of the bowlers were tested and met. Above all the common theme was fun and competitiveness - just as it will be from August 1-6. There are still a few spots left in bowling, with no special experience required. The most important thing is that the balls will roll.

Table Tennis

Table tennis requires the players to have athleticism, dexterity, stamina and mental fitness. Yet table tennis is a sport that is also suitable for beginners. The fast-paced game at the table promises to men and women of all ages and performance classes exciting face-to-face matches. The equipment used in table tennis is minimal: with a paddle, a pair of sneakers and a couple of balls, you are ready to go. Whether alone or in team, doubles or mixed, old or young, with or without a handicap, the fun the game is most important. The fascinating sport allows you to contend for medals and have fun at the same time.

Bodybuilding

Anyone who wants to show off his or her toned, muscled body is the right place at the bodybuilding competition the Cologne Gay Games. Strong and conditioned men and women from around the world will compete as part of a professional event at the German Sports University in Cologne from August 1-3. The impressive sports and show spectacle will be of the highest quality for both participants and spectators. Anyone who wishes to compete before the judges in a single or Pairs competition, using the standards of symmetry, muscle development and posing, should quickly sign up for one of the few participation spots.

Cologne went crazy this past Monday with the high point of the 2009/2010 Street Carnival season: The Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) Parade wound its way through the city center with over 11,000 participants. Cold and snowy weather did not stop the Cologners from dressing up in colorful costumes and pulling fantastic floats through the city.

Of course the thousands of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders in Cologne are a big part of the city-wide celebration. Whether swaying and singing on the sidelines as spectators or throwing candy and flowers to the crowds from the beautifully-decorated floats, the gay community of Cologne is not excluded from the carnival.

The Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 is taking place from July 31st. until August 7th. 35 sports competitions and five cultural events and an expected 12,000 participants, make it simular in size of the Olympic Games. 34,000 visitors will join in celebrating the opening ceromony on July 31st 2010.

The VIII Gay Games Cologne is a quadrenial sports and cultural event which is based on participation, integration and the achievment of personal records. At the same time it is supposed to fight against discrimination of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders.

Volunteers_copyright VVGThe Cologne Gay Games is major international event, and there is a place for you even if you are not going to participate in the sports or cultural programs. The Games are a huge project that requires a great deal of individual and group support. You can become a part of Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010. We need you! Become one of more than 3,000 volunteers who will make the Cologne Gay Games the largest sport and cultural celebration in the world. Be part of it!

So far there are over 100 different types of Volunteer positions identified. In the upcoming weeks more tasks and needs will be identified. We are looking for support from a wide range of different areas and abilities. The jobs range from accreditation workers and tournament escorts to driving services, support for visitors, and specific sports support.

It does not matter whether you come from Cologne, Germany or another part of the world. We want your help whether you speak German, English, or another language. You can volunteer if you want to help with a certain sport, with the cultural and events area, or with the opening ceremony. We will have the perfect Volunteer task for you!

Here is how it works:

Review the positions offered in the Volunteers Portal and choose one of the options.
Not finding the position you want? Register as a volunteer and you will receive information about new positions which you can choose.

The Volunteers Portal offers even more. It puts you in contact with other volunteers. You may find someone in your area. The portal will provide training for your task in Cologne. You will also receive information about the special masters program for the Volunteers, about admission to evening meetings, and much more. The volunteer coordinator for your chosen area will provide you with up-to-date information over the portal.

Of course you can also register as a volunteer, even if you have already registered as a participant in a sport or a cultural event.

COLOUR presents GAY GAMES OPENING PARTY – Cologne Lanxess Arena

Following the Gay Games opening ceremony with expected 30,000-40,000 visitors the official GAY GAMES OPENING PARTY will take place at Lanxess Arena, arranged by the COLOUR team.

With an impressive backdrop the international party people will be able to experience an extraordinary spectacle. Opening up as much as six floors COLOUR presents the world’s most famous DJs, not just from Europe, but from the American circuit parties as well. The show acts are going to be different this time: Instead of go-go dancers and drag artists, gifted bodies of international athletes will catch people’s breath.

In the run-up to the Games tickets cost 35 euros for registered sportswomen and sportsmen and 40 euros for those who are not registered.

We start at 10 a.m. (be punctual!) in Cologne with the blue vintage bus and a glass of Prosecco to the Ruhr Metropolis. After a joyful journey on the bus of the 1970s with the similar young tour-guide we reach Essen and the Zeche Zollverein (former coal-mine) - the heart of the cultural capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Culture - many attractions to explore: Industrial plants, Sculpture Park, Red Dot Design Museum, the new Ruhr Museum, the Palace of projects with 60 designs to improve the world, or the summer work swimming pool. There's something for everyone here. In the visitor center there is plenty of information on mine, structural change, and is the starting point for your explorations of the impressively large area.
For the stay at Zeche Zollverin, we have about 6 hours. Then we go back together to Cologne, where we will arrive at 7 p.m. - a good time for the Evening Program.

Anyone who likes a slightly different experience can visit the nearby Museum of Industry.

We start at 10 a.m. (be punctual!) in Cologne with the blue vintage bus and a glass of Prosecco to the Ruhr Metropolis. After a joyful journey on the bus of the 1970s with the similar young tour-guide we reach Bochum. Herbert Grönemeyer (a famous German musician) sang songs about this city and its Currywurst!

Since the rise of the coal and steel industry, the Ruhr-area was always a region of immigrants. Meanwhile, many Muslims are also part of the "Kohlenpott" (coal area). On this foundation Ruhr.2010 was able to initiate a unique exhibition featuring artists from the Islamic world-class at the art museum in Bochum: "Unexpected / Unexpected" (free admission on this day.) Likewise, we expect the impressive walk-in the mine with deep tunnels and high views of mining shaft towers. Bochum's city center is not far and anyone who likes to eat there, try one of the famous curry sausage: Currywurst, fries, red and white.
For the stay in Bochum, we have about 6 hours. Then we go back together to Cologne, where we will arrive at 7 p.m. - a good time for the Evening Program.

Description
Did you know that the Romanesque church "Maria in the Capitol" is built to the exact dimensions of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem? Do you want to experience a Romanesque church, which today is still "alive"? Do you want to see where the bones of the Magi spend their last night before they were transferred to the old cathedral?
The 12 Romanesque churches in Cologne's city center are a real treasure of the city. They are art-historically very significant for Cologne and now dominate the townscape. Badly damaged in World War II, they were rebuilt in the 1970s. Well worth a visit!
The graduate theologian Burkhard Brücker would like to take you closer to three of the Romanesque churches in Cologne: St. Maria im Kapitol, St. Maria Lyskirchen, and Gross St. Martin. After the tour (10:30 a.m. to 12) you can stay for noon prayers in Gross St. Martin and experience the church as a living place.

Apropos love - the amours are as they have always been: At first dangerous, then comfortable. And otherwise? Business lesbians network, feminists debate, and the young ones party. Three generations of lesbian life: That we can be proud of!
Like no other singer, Carolina Brauckmann has defined lesbian song.
She produced six albums and received the Rosa Courage Prize for her commitment to lesbian politics. At the Gay Games, she will be presenting classics from her repertoire and new, previously unpublished songs.
Special guest: Gudrun Eymann, formerly Madame Furiosa (accordion).

Description
The Rhine has influenced women's everyday lives in many different ways. Women worked as inland mariners and fishmongers. They brewed beer and had their grain milled in medieval mills on the Rhine. They bathed in Cologne's river swimming pools and were drowned in the Rhine if they were found to be pregnant without being married.
We will sail right through the different centuries on the Colonia and will narrate stories about life on and near the Rhine while you enjoy coffee, cake, or a local Kölsch beer from Cologne.

Description
Lights, camera, action for big-city open-air cinema.
On a green field and in an urban setting, between Saturn Tower and Media Park, the Cologne Film House is again presenting this year a fine selection of films and 100 seats in the open air cinema. Just in time for the Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 you can enjoy films on sports, gay / lesbian life, classics, and new films each in the original version in the open air. It's a unique experience! In June we'll tell you which films will be shown!
In the open-air cinema about 500 people can watch, plus up to 100 chairs can be hired locally. Tickets are available only at the box office! In case of inclement weather, the movies will be shown in the cinema of the Filmhaus.

Cathedral - guided tour of the excavations

Description
Was there a history before the construction of the Cologne Cathedral? Almost unbelievable, there were times without the Cologne Cathedral. Excavations below the cathedral, however, show the crucial importance of the site. Here were found the nucleus of one of the earliest Christian communities in the north of the Roman Empire. Even the foundations of the old cathedral can be seen.
This spectacular tour takes us through the excavations under the cathedral, a place that is not publicly available ... and quite popular. Early registration is advised, as the number of participants is limited. Minimum age 16 years!

Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 in Cologne Carnival - great Party!

In particular this year, one parade float was decorated with the banner of VIII Gay Games Cologne 2010. Cologne announced to the world that it is a cosmopolitan and important sports and cultural city, with the Cologne Gay Games occurring from July 31 through August 7, as one of the highlights of the year. Everyone in Cologne has given the Cologne Gay Games the traditional city salute: „Kölle Alaaf, Kölle Alaaf, Kölle Alaaf“!

The Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 is taking place from July 31st. until August 7th. 35 sports competitions and five cultural events and an expected 12,000 participants, make it simular in size of the Olympic Games. 34,000 visitors will join in celebrating the opening ceromony on July 31st 2010.

The VIII Gay Games Cologne is a quadrenial sports and cultural event which is based on participation, integration and the achievment of personal records. At the same time it is supposed to fight against discrimination of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders.

5,300 artists and athletes have already registered at Cologne's sports and cultural festival Gay Games VIII (www.games-cologne.com) and every new day the numbers grow. Now, Australian Olympic gold medalist Matthew Mitcham has announced he will travel to Germany to be part of Cologne's edition of the Gay Games. Matthew will be making appearances at several events while in Cologne, but won’t be competing in the sports program.

“I’m excited to be part of something so important for our communities around the globe. This event brings lesbian and gay life out on the court, onto the track, and into the pool", Matthew explains. “Being ‘out’ means for me being just as I am with nothing to be ashamed about and no reasons to hide. Participating at the Gay Games is a great chance for all gays and lesbians to show that we as a community are not like the stereotypes the straight media loves to portray. I will take time off from training and travel to Cologne, since I strongly feel we have to celebrate our own values and help others to accept that it is ok to be different.” Matthew will capture his trip to Germany and participation in the Gay Games on his Facebook page, allowing people who can’t be there to follow his personal story of being involved in a life-changing event like the Gay Games.

Emy Ritt and Kurt Dahl, co-presidents of the Federation of Gay Games, are thrilled to have in Matthew Mitcham another top athlete supporting this year’s quadrennial sports and cultural event. “Matthew, one of the most recognised openly gay sports persons of our time, is a fantastic role model, especially for younger people. Matt is only 20 years old. He is focused and successful in his sport and doesn’t have to hide being gay. This is something that Gay Games founder Dr. Tom Waddell would have been so proud of. After almost 30 years, the Gay Games continues to make lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender life visible through sports and culture, thus allowing new generations to be accepted just as they are.”

German Airline Lufthansa has generously agreed to provide Matthew’s air travel to Germany. Games Cologne and its organizing team are working around the clock to prepare their city to become the global centre of LGBT life for one full week. Annette Wachter, Co-President of organizing team Games Cologne said “Every registered participant is an obligation for us to serve as fantastic hosts and create a lifetime of memories for our guests from all around the globe. But to be honest, having one of the most recognised sports persons like Matthew Mitcham attending is a great acknowledgement of the work we have been doing so far. The Gay Games Marathon as well as Half Marathon will be co-ordinated by `TuS Köln rrh.` Race Director Ralph Scherbaum is surrounded by a Team of Volunteers.

The runs are taking place on August 7th 2010. Starting at Wiener Platz in Cologne Mühlheim, the race circuit will pass by many historical building sites such as Herler Castle in Buchheim, Manor Schlagbaum, Wichheimer Mill in Holweide, and Manor Mielenforst in Dellbrück. From there it goes back to Mühlheim, to the finish line.

Co-President of Gay Games Cologne 2010, Annette Wachter, is certain that the co-operation with the ½ Marathon is a win – win situation for everyone involved.
“With `TuS Köln rrh.` we found a wonderful partner who is more than able to execute such an event on a stunning race course.”

Ralph Scheerbaum, his approximately 200 Volunteers and TuS Köln rrh. are up for the challenge of such a diverse group of 2,500 runners on the east bank of the Rhine River. Wiener Platz in the center of Mühlheim shall not only be start and finish line for the running competition but also venue for the 3rd Mülheim Olive Festival and an After Run Party. Because of all this, it will be an attractive event for families as well as the many international visitors of the Gay Games Cologne. Finally, after a wait of several years, the right hand side of the Rhine will host a Marathon again.

People behind the Cologne Gay Games.

Here, we would like to present people who support the VIII. Gay Games 2010 in Cologne with their ideas, creativity and power. People who make the games come true from 31. July - 07. August 2010.

Michael Lohaus, 42 - Co-President

Michael, is just happy as soon as he has water to swim in. From his first attempts aged 3years old until he gained a Title during the competition in Chicago 2006, the male Co President of the VIII Gay Games Cologne 2010 became a passionate fish in the sea. His dutys on Ground include Communication with the American World Union, Federation of Gay Games ( FGG ). He is also directing the Steering Committee. Michael says he realy enjoys being part of the Team from the scratch, seing the progress of the Games as a whole and to feel the positive vibrations from everyone, in particular the volunteers. If his busy schedule allows him to do, he will participate at one of the many swimming competitions, taking place in the new Natatorium in Cologne / Muengersdorf.

Andrea Müller, 46 - Cultural Committee

Andrea is held responsible for the Cultural Committee and inspired by working with so many different personalitys. She has been dedicated in becoming a Member of the Organisation Team of the worlds largest Sports and Culture Event in Cologne in 2010. She is now taking care of all Cultural Events, the Opening and Closing Ceremony, the Village, Parties, and the offers of `Fans and Friends`. Diverse as her work tasks are her hobbys. She loves knitting, sewing, designing jewelry and is a passionate golf player.

Ingo Toenges, 41 - Marketing

Ingo is leading the Marketing Committee and extremely excited and eager to promote the Games wordwide. As a Journalist and Editor of the `Box` Magazine he is having a huge network within the Gay and Lesbian Community. Also his engagements within the fields ambassador program, sponsoring and design are taking advantage off his network. Although it is not obvious he is doing work outs, he can be met at the Squash Center, as he describes himself. However, Ingo loves good Restaurants and Theater, too and has a good sense of humor! He particularly enjoys working for the Gay Games as he meets a wide range of stunning people he most probably would have never met otherwise.

Clarissa Bucher, 37 - Press Committee

Clarissa is an active swimmer since 12 years. Her Team is `Rheinperlen` of SC Janus, whose website she is taking care of. From 1997 - 1999 she has been a member of the board of SC Janus and has been organising Parties and Festivals. She also took ownership as a corporate officer of EGLSF at the EuroGames in Paris, Zurich and Hannover. At the Gay Games in Amsterdam in 1998 she got 2 medals and also a new passion for running ! Ever since she lives and works in Duesseldorf - just for pragmatic reasons - as she promises!At the Press Committee her dutys are texting, interviewing, editing and taking pics for the website and the newsletter of the VIII. Christopher Klütmann, 33 - Volunteer Management

Christopher is excited about the fact that the VIII Gay Games Cologne 2010 are taking place in his home town. He is responsible for Volunteer Management. An expected 3000 Volunteers need to be taken care of and everyone should be supported within their preparations. The dedicated dancer says the best thing about volunteer work is to meet a huge diversity of humans as well as the opportunity to make such an event possible, through Motivation that only Volunteering comes with. Christopher loves Opera and Theater but also carnival and he will participate at the Half Marathon during the Gay Games.

Dagmar Ziege, 51 - Sports Committee

Dagmar is asst. Chief Executive Officer of the `StadtSportBund Köln` ( SSBK ) and also responsible for the Sports Committee which is organising all 35 disciplines of the VIII. Gay Games Cologne 2010.
Due to her occupational integration within the `StadtSportBund` ( Citys Sports Alliance ) she maintains a good network to the Sports Community in Cologne and copes with all challenges that come along. In 1996, as a soccer coach of the male soccer Team of SC Janus ( Cream Team Cologne ) she achieved gold at the EuroGames in Berlin. As a player of `STV Lövenich` she accomplished the final of the German soccer Cup Match in 1987 and in 1998, again as coach of the Unity Pirates - former women soccer Team of FC Janus - she participated at the Gay Games in Amsterdam. As a chargeback to her wide range of engagements you will rather meet Dagmar these days on a golf course than on a soccer pitch!

Which airport is the closest to Cologne?

The Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 is the “easy travel” games. Anyone traveling to Cologne can use several airports near the city.

The closest airport is the CologneBonn Airport. The direct train to the Cologne Central Station, the easiest option from the airport, takes only 15 minutes. Trains run every 15 minutes between the airport and Cologne.

The Düsseldorf International Airport is also an easy option. It is 40 minutes by train to the Cologne Central Station, and trains run every 20 minutes.

The Frankfurt Rhine/Main International Airport, one of the largest in Europe, is one hour by train to Cologne, with trains traveling every hour to Cologne directly from the airport.

Another option is the Weeze Airport, one of the fastest-growing regional airports in Europe. Located near Düsseldorf and several cities in the Netherlands, transportation from the Weeze Airport to Cologne will take about 2 hours.

Many airlines offer a “Rail&Fly” ticket that will provide the train ticket to and from the airport and Cologne for no additional cost.
